Zeitgeist The Movie

Ah Zeitgeist. Yeah it confused me too when I first watched it. But interestingly SO much of it has been debunked and so much of it is either bad scholarship or outright false. Many of the comparisons they use refer to different languages and they apply it to English.

For example they say that the term Sun Set comes from Horus being the Sun God and Set (meaning darkness) being his brother. That doesn't work. For a few reasons. Horus is NOT the Sun God. Osiris is. SETH was not Horus' brother but his uncle. And Seth was not the God of darkness but the God of storm. The actual fight between the sun and night was a fight between Ra and Apopi. Bad scholarship. Another reason is that Sun and Set are english words that do not refer to either Horus or Seth.

They also try to tie Horus in with Jesus. They use MANY inaccuracies in this attempt as well. Here is a well dictated response by a historian about Zeitgiest:

A few examples of this is that it is claimed that Horus mother was a virgin. False. Isis, Horus mother, had regular sex with Osiris and used a golden dildo. He was not called the Lamb of God but was called the Hawk. Horus never died. His FATHER died and was dismembered by Seth, and was resurrected by Isis. The claim that Horus was born on December 25th marked by a star in the sky, was worshipped by 3 kings, had 12 disciples, was baptized and crucified...ALL LIES. This claim was based off of a poet named Gerald Massey, and this was shown to be 100% false.

Zeitgiest also tries to connect Jesus with Attis, saying that these same events happened in his life. Again, bad scholarship and outright falsities. Attis was not a sun god, nothing is stated about him being born on Dec 25. He killed HIMSELF and he never did rise again. Again, lies.

Again the connection is attempted with Krishna. He also was not a sun god, was not born on Dec 25, was not born of a virgin (was actually the 8th son of Devaki and Mathura), Died from an arrow wound in 3102 and was never raised again.

Another connection was attempted with Dionysus. Again, he ws not a sun god. He WAS the god of wine, but the connection to Jesus stops there. He was NOT born on Dec 25, was dismembered by Titan and resurrected by Apollo. He had hundreds of FEMALE disciples.

Another connection was attempted with Mithra. He was not a sun God, he was born on Dec 21st, was born from a rock, never died, and did not have any disciples.

Trying to connect these with Jesus is imaginary. For one thing celebrating Jesus birth on Dec 25 was the invention of Pope Liberio in 354 and was not a teaching of Christianity. In fact even Pope Liberio did not say that Jesus was born on this date, but that we would celebrate it on this date since we do not know when Jesus was born.

Possibly the SILLIEST connection that Zeitgiest tries to make is to compare the SUN to the SON. If you watch the video above you will see how ridiculous this is. It's an bad English pun and does not work.

Finally, I want to post this response to Zeitgeist. It thoroughly debunks this shockingly inaccurate video. I would educate yourself on this before you let this video confuse you.

Good point, james. If we only go by JWN our range is not very broad. The JWN community makes up a very small part of the total exJW community. However, I would have said JWN is more 80/20 in favor of atheists...

let's not let this get into the same old same old debate of atheism vs belief.

Don't understand psychological, sociological, or religious curiosity? This wasn't to "prove" God or not. This was to see how many actually stop believing in God and who do not, for purely educational value. But lots of people like to mock, derail, hijack, and change the subject. That's what makes a serious discussion about who continues belief and who doesn't impossible on sites like this. There were a handful of serious answers, the thread went off topic, the mocking began, and the thread was completely derailed. There are always going to be those that feel free to mock the serious inquiry and derail these types of threads. No one was asking to "prove" their god. This was a social inquiry of who stopped believing in God and who did not. Not every inquiry has to have a specific purpose as if it would be published in a study. That doesn't make it a less serious or honest question. It was a question that many have asked and it was to satisfy the curiosity of those that wonder how many stop believing in god and how many don't.

I noticed this same trend, Sab. There are a huge number of belief systems out there. And the majority settle into one of a few of them. On my other thread that attempted some sort of survey about this it seems that the majority were agnostic, atheist, agnostic atheist, or believer. There were a few others sprinkled in that had some form of new age belief. A higher ENERGY source, but not necessarily intelligent.

Cofty has illuminated me GREATLY on this subject. He was one of the rare breeds that left the organization, became a born again Christian, and then became atheist. He says that after having to be willing to give up everything important to him and what he believed, he was then willing to research ALL his beliefs and give up belief in the existence of God if he could not prove it. I hope I got him right on this. If I haven't, I apologize cofty. I think that may be the key. Because of putting all your trust in some men, you have to reevaluate EVERYTHING you believe, and God is included in this.

I still hold to my original hypothesis that most people that become exJWs either stop believing in God all together, or majorly doubt His existence. And I STILL hold to my hypothesis that many (not all) say, "If this wasn't the truth, then nothing in religion/the bible is". That's not supposed to be an accusation or a generalization. MANY go and do research before coming to their conclusions about God. Sometimes I have seen that some go out, not in an attempt to "FIND OUT", but to "PROVE WRONG". That's just been my experience with some. So don't think I'm saying it about all that become atheists. But you will usually find someone to support what you are setting out to prove. I could "prove" that the WT has illuminati connections. I could "prove" that 9/11 was an inside job. I could "prove" that the Bible is the Word of God. And I could "prove" that it is not.

The generic answer is believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, lived on earth, died, and was resurrected.

Some people would say that being part of a specific religion makes you a Christian. Some would say, "I was raised a Catholic, so I am a Christian." Or I was raised a "Lutheran so I am a Christian."

I submit that joining a church, being part of one, being raised in one, etc... does not make you a Christian necessarily. I do not believe that religion has any part of being a Christian or not. I've heard it said that religion is man searching for God, but Christianity is God searching for man.

I usually avoid the Bible in certain discussions because many here do not view it as an authority, but I'll post a bit about what I believe it says about being a Christian. I'm not going to argue with anyone if these points are true or not. I don't want to let this thread descend into another atheist v believer thread. So these are just scriptures that I feel have a bearing on the subject.

Romans 10:17 says that faith is the key. Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. So to be a Christian FAITH is essential. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Romans 10:4 says that Jesus is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who BELIEVES. So RIGHTEOUSNESS that is given by Grace and not works is essential. And being declared righteous only comes from believing.

John 14:6 says that Jesus is the only way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by Jesus. So going directly to Jesus Christ and asking Him for salvation of your sins is essential to be a Christan.

So what about works? Most people say that you must be Christ-like. In my view, this is actually not technically accurate. Good work and acting like Jesus is not what saves you. Eph 2:8,9 says that it is by grace that we have been saved through faith; and not that of ourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. Gal 2:16 says that man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ.

So in my view, works do not make you a Christian. However, works DO show that you already ARE a Christian. It demonstrates your Christianity to others. It allows others to say, "He must be a Christian because he tries to live as he preaches."

Like has been brought up, this is shockingly missing in many believers. They claim to be Christian, but when you look at their actions, they couldn't be further from what Jesus taught in the 4 gosples.

So I'd break Christianity down to this: HEARING the message, PRAYING to Jesus about the message, BELIEVING the message, having FAITH in the message, LIVING the message. Note that man made religion has no part in that. Religion and Christianity are often used as synonyms, but they are very different.

If it was serious it would have listed ALL the gods we had to choose from.

This wasn't an issue of what god do you believe in. It was do you believe in a creator or not. I understood the flaws, but there is a main flaw in the understanding. Again, some are not separating belief in a creator with religion, the bible, or other diety's.

And here's the issue, when the discussion of thor, the FSM, fairies and unicorns, etc come up, it usually to mock and not to have a serious conversation. I understand the philosophical points that sometimes come up with the use of these arguments, but usually they are brought up, not to talk about philosophically, but to mock.

Mocking and joking is fine. But this was supposed to be a serious accounting of who still believes and who doesn't. It wasn't supposed to descend into an argument about IF God exists or not. But merely to see who stopped believing after they left the WT and who did not.

The potential is there. We just need a perfect storm like Candace Conti. The public ness of the Sandusky issue is what has really led to their downfall. It needs to have MASSIVE media attention (which the Conti trial does not have enough of).
